I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sophie and in October 2015 I founded The Fable. At the end of 2014 I left a job at L'Oreal Luxury to embark on a new journey. Having spent four years living and working in Melbourne, I packed my life into my car and entered a semi-nomadic period. With no job or set plan, but hungry for an adventure I went and lived in an Indian yoga ashram in the Himalayas. From Ashram to Jaipur, Rajasthan, a series of chance encounters lead me to a textile factory. One where I saw the production possibility of a product I have for a long time had an affinity with: The Silk Shirt.
Having always struggled to find a silk shirt which ticked all the boxes, price point included, I decided to devote myself to its' creation. Having spent four years marketing Giorgio Armani and Yves Saint Laurent I felt adamant the quality and attention to detail demonstrated by such prestige brands must be emulated in The Fable shirt.
For the first two years, The Fable produced silk shirts in Jaipur, India, where the business idea was first born. The original factory was small, family run and ethical. All traits I felt were important in manufacture. As The Fable grew and evolved, so too did its need for a larger factory with greater production capacity and in August 2017 the decision was made to shift production to Shanghai. China is the world leader in silk manufacturing and the fabric is deeply etched in its history so it was the natural choice in location. The factory eventually chosen was selected specially for its ethical practices and because it specialises in producing silk clothing. The result is a product which is made to the highest quality, by tailors who are well looked after.
Having personally spent time in Shanghai I have visited the factory, the silk weaver and the dying mill and can attest to the ethical accreditations The Fable factory has earned. You will find below details of these accreditations, my own factory observations and photos of the people and places that have brought life to this brand.
